The clever smart light switch Tap gets numerous new features
Tewke’s Tap smart light switch is quietly turning into something much bigger than a lighting controller.
The UK-based company has announced a wave of upgrades that add motion detection, detailed home health monitoring, deeper energy insights, and future Google Gemini–powered assistance, all delivered through over-the-air updates.
At its core, Tap still replaces a standard wall switch, but it now brings far more context into the home. Users can already see room temperature, humidity, CO₂ levels, and overall air quality directly in the Tap app, with the option to track that data over time. That makes it easier to spot patterns, whether rising humidity that could lead to mould or CO₂ spikes that might be affecting concentration.
Lighting automation is also getting smarter. Tap now supports motion-based lighting, so lights can turn on automatically when you enter a room and switch off again once it’s empty. Scheduling has expanded, too, allowing lighting scenes to change throughout the day, including around sunrise and sunset, without manual input.
One of the more distinctive updates coming later this year is two-stage motion detection. As you walk past, the Tap switch can briefly act as a display – showing things like a clock — before switching back to full controls when you step closer. Over time, users will be able to customise what appears on screen via the app.
Energy is another big focus. Tap already shows real-time pricing for variable tariffs, helping users decide when it’s cheapest to run appliances. In early 2026, smart meter integration will expand this view to whole-home energy usage, alongside new historical reporting inside the app to highlight trends and potential savings.
Looking further ahead, Tewke plans to introduce TewkeAI, a voice-activated assistant powered by Google Gemini. Unlike always-listening speakers, it’s designed to be user-triggered, offering visual answers on the switch itself when you ask questions.
All of this arrives without rewiring, hubs, or major installation work, reinforcing Tap’s ambition to make advanced home automation feel simple, subtle, and genuinely useful.
