Tado’s X smart radiator thermostat update makes it easier to balance heat
Getting consistent heating across every room has long been one of the trickiest, and most expensive, parts of running a modern heating system. Tado is now aiming to remove that friction altogether with a new software update for its X smart radiator thermostats that brings digital hydronic balancing to homes across Europe.
Hydronic balancing is widely seen as best practice for efficient heating, whether you’re running a traditional boiler or a heat pump. The idea is simple: make sure hot water is distributed evenly throughout the system so one room isn’t roasting while another stays stubbornly cold. In reality, achieving that balance has usually meant calling in a professional, draining the system, and replacing radiator valves, a process that’s both time-consuming and costly.
Tado’s new approach replaces that physical intervention with software. Using Tado X Smart Radiator Thermostats, the system automatically regulates water flow through each radiator to balance heat across the home. There’s no need to touch the plumbing, drain the system, or swap out existing valves, and installation takes minutes rather than hours.
The company says the result is not just more consistent comfort, but improved efficiency too. By optimising flow across radiators, the heating system can operate closer to its ideal performance point, reducing wasted energy and helping lower overall consumption, particularly important for heat pump users.
The Hydronic Balancing feature is available now for all homes using Tado X devices. For users with a Tado Heat Pump Optimiser X connected to a Panasonic AQUAREA heat pump, the feature is included free of charge. Everyone else can access it as part of the Tado AI Assist subscription, priced at €3.99 per month.
