SwitchBot’s new presence sensor runs on AAA batteries for ages

SwitchBot has unveiled its latest gadget, a battery-powered presence sensor that promises far more accuracy than your typical motion detector, and it runs for up to two years on a pair of AAA batteries.

For anyone tired of lights switching off while they sit still, this might be the upgrade you’ve been waiting for.

The new sensor pairs a 60Hz mmWave radar with a traditional PIR sensor and a built-in light sensor, giving it a level of awareness most budget detectors simply can’t match. While the PIR handles the quick initial trigger when someone enters a room, the mmWave radar takes over by detecting tiny movements, things like subtle posture shifts or even breathing. That means it can keep a room “occupied” even if you’re sitting perfectly still, solving the biggest pain point of PIR-only devices.

SwitchBot has layered in some thoughtful intelligence, too. The sensor uses AI-based environmental learning to recognise and filter out interference from things like fans or air conditioners, and a pet-avoidance function helps reduce false triggers from small animals. When you combine data from motion, micro-motion, and ambient light levels, the sensor can deliver genuinely context-aware automation, the kind that keeps lights and appliances on only when they’re actually needed.

Because it’s battery powered, installation is refreshingly flexible. The sensor attaches to walls, furniture, or metal surfaces using its rotatable magnetic base, and with an IPX5 rating, it’s bathroom-friendly as well. The range is solid, with up to 8 metres of movement detection and 5 metres for static presence, covering most small and mid-size rooms easily.

Smart home support is broad. The sensor works with Matter via a SwitchBot Matter-enabled hub, Home Assistant, and major voice assistants. Crucially, it also supports local automation, so routines continue working even if your internet doesn’t.

The SwitchBot Presence Sensor is available now through the SwitchBot website, priced at $29.99 / £32.99 / €32.99 – a very SwitchBot-style price for a device that punches well above its weight.
