Smart intercom systems are shifting from simple access tools to full communication hubs, with Ring rolling out new features that expand how users monitor, review, and respond to visitors remotely.

This update follows Ring’s broader push into AI-powered home security, building on Ring Intercom’s core functionality that connects existing building intercom systems to a smartphone while introducing smarter alerts designed to reduce false notifications and highlight genuinely suspicious activity.

Ring is now adding features that focus on missed interactions, reflecting how delivery-heavy lifestyles have increased demand for systems that capture activity even when users are not immediately available.

New features focused on missed visitors

Ring Intercom now includes video and audio history, allowing users to review missed calls and interactions for up to 180 days, bringing it closer to the functionality already found in smart doorbell ecosystems.

The system also introduces visitor snapshots, automatically capturing images when someone presses the intercom, ensuring users can identify who visited even if they were unable to respond in real time.

Video preview alerts are now available for Intercom Video users, enabling quick visual checks directly from notifications, which reduces the need to open the app before deciding how to respond.

These additions reflect a broader shift in smart home security, where systems increasingly prioritise passive recording and later review alongside real-time interaction.

Automation and privacy controls

Ring is also introducing Quick Replies as a free feature, allowing the intercom to respond automatically with pre-recorded messages to help maintain communication even when users are unavailable.

This automation aligns with wider trends in smart home devices, where systems handle routine interactions to reduce manual input while maintaining responsiveness for visitors and deliveries.

The update also adds Privacy Zones, enabling users to block specific areas from the camera’s view, addressing ongoing concerns around surveillance boundaries in shared or urban environments.

These controls allow users to monitor entry points while limiting visibility into neighbouring spaces or sensitive areas, reflecting increasing emphasis on privacy within connected home devices.

The new features are available through Ring Protect subscription plans, with a free trial offered to existing users and rollout underway.
