Arriving in Q1 2026, Aliro is a new cross-platform smart-lock standard that brings NFC tap-to-unlock and UWB hands-free unlocking to phones and wearables, all without needing the cloud.

A fresh take on digital keys

It has been a long wait, but Aliro has finally cleared verification and should hit the market in early 2026, according to the Connectivity Standards Alliance. The standard combines NFC, Bluetooth LE, and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) so that phones and watches can act as digital keys regardless of the brand.

Aliro keeps credentials on your device and uses asymmetric encryption to communicate directly with the lock. This means you won’t need to open an app or rely on a cloud connection, allowing it to work offline just like a physical key. It is a reassuring move that feels long overdue.

Why this changes things

We expect Aliro to break down platform silos. While Apple’s Home Key set the bar, Aliro aims to bring Android up to speed so a household with iPhones, Pixels, and Galaxies can all use the same lock without any hassle.

Major manufacturers and chipmakers have backed the effort, including Apple, Google, Samsung, Qualcomm, and NXP, and several lock brands have already signalled their support.

Don’t get too excited just yet

For consumers, there are a few practical things to keep in mind.

Compatibility will be a factor, as locks need specific radios and antennas, meaning older models likely won’t be upgradable. The system uses different modes for different needs: NFC for deliberate taps, BLE for low-energy commands, and UWB for precise unlocking while your phone is still in your pocket.

Crucially, it works without a data connection, which is vital if your phone’s signal is weak.

The rollout will depend on certification timelines and how quickly manufacturers can ship certified models. Ultimately, real-world performance, including elements like battery life and setup friction, will decide the verdict, but it’s real, and it’s coming in 2026.
