The Aqara Radiator Thermostat W600 is a well-priced smart TRV that adds Matter and a few extra bells and whistles to the ageing E1. It is smartly designed, quick to fit, and offers a meaningful choice between Matter over Thread convenience and Aqara’s more feature-rich Zigbee setup. Run within the Aqara ecosystem it proves dependable and genuinely useful. Outside of that environment things are less polished, but if you already have an Aqara hub in place, it is a straightforward way to add smarter control to individual rooms.

Aqara Radiator Thermostat W600: Introduction
Smart radiator thermostats live in an odd space. At one end of the market are full heating platforms from companies like Tado and Honeywell that want to manage your entire system.
At the other are smart thermostats that do little more than save you a walk to the thermostat.
The Aqara Radiator Thermostat W600 positions itself between those two extremes.
Brands like TP-Link, Netatmo, and Shelly offer similarly priced TRVs, but none currently match the W600 when it comes to Matter support.
What Aqara is offering here is room-level control that works independently of your boiler, combined with Matter over Thread compatibility similar to Eve Thermo, but at a noticeably lower cost.

Design and components

From a design perspective, the W600 is clearly a step forward from the E1, which went on sale back in 2022.
It looks more refined and more confident, resembling higher-end options like Tado rather than a budget accessory.
The matte white casing looks clean on the radiator, and the front display is sharp and easy to read.
Temperature and status icons are clearly shown, and the screen can be rotated so it remains readable regardless of how the unit is mounted.
Manual control is handled by twisting the body of the thermostat, with an additional button on the top. That button is one of the weaker elements of the design. The different press combinations are not intuitive, and tasks like factory resetting often sent me back to the manual to double-check what sequence was required.

Installation, thankfully, is much smoother. Aqara includes a generous selection of valve adapters in the box, supporting M30x1.5 and a wide range of common fittings.
The mounting hardware is metal rather than plastic, which feels solid and is arguably better than what some more expensive rivals provide.

Replacing an existing Tado TRV with the W600 took under five minutes once the correct adapter was in place. After installation, the thermostat runs an automatic calibration to learn the valve’s movement range. This process can also be triggered manually from the app if needed.
The Aqara app guides you through everything clearly, complete with diagrams. Power is supplied by two AA batteries, accessed by removing the outer shell.

One word of caution here. The internal LEDs are extremely bright once exposed, so avoid looking directly at them. This is also where you will find both the Matter and Aqara pairing QR codes.

A standout feature of the W600, as is now common on a wide range of Aqara devices, is its dual-protocol approach.
You can run it either as a Matter over Thread device or as a Zigbee device within the Aqara ecosystem. You must choose one or the other, and only one protocol can be active at any given time.

By default, the W600 ships configured for Thread. Switching to Zigbee involves a protocol change process that takes roughly five minutes. The same applies if you later want to switch back, and it requires a reset triggered by double tapping and then holding the button for ten seconds.
When running in Thread mode, the W600 can be added directly to platforms like Apple Home or Amazon Alexa using a compatible Matter controller and Thread border router, such as an Apple TV or Echo speaker.
It can also be added via the Aqara app if you have an Aqara M3 hub acting as a border router. Even in Thread mode, the Aqara app offers the most complete experience.
Zigbee mode unlocks the full range of Aqara features though. This includes window detection, more flexible scheduling behaviour, child lock, frost protection controls, and deeper integration with Aqara sensors.

An Aqara Zigbee hub is required, but for existing Aqara users this is where the W600 really shines.
The thermostat supports Aqara temperature and humidity sensors, such as the T1, the W100 Climate Sensor, or even the FP300 multi-sensor, which I used during testing.

When paired, you can choose whether the W600 relies on its internal sensor or the external one, which is helpful if radiator placement skews temperature readings. Temperature calibration is also available for further adjustment.
Performance

Temperature adjustments are made in 0.5 degree steps. Changes made in the Aqara app or through connected smart home platforms appear on the thermostat itself after a brief pause. The delay is noticeable but never frustrating.

In terms of noise, the W600 is unobtrusive. Aqara rates it at under 30dB, and in practice it sounds very similar to a Tado TRV. You will hear a soft mechanical whirr, but it is unlikely to disturb sleep unless you are particularly sensitive.
Scheduling within the Aqara app allows up to seven time periods per day, with separate profiles available if you have multiple devices installed.

One annoyance is that adjustments made in third-party platforms do not always sync back to the Aqara app, which can make it harder to tell exactly what schedule is active.
Window detection worked reliably during testing, correctly reacting to rapid temperature drops. A child lock is included for homes with young children, and frost protection is enabled by default to prevent damage during cold spells.
It is important to remember that this is not a full heating system. The W600 has no direct connection to your boiler. It can only provide heat when the boiler is already running due to demand elsewhere.
If you use a smart thermostat to control your boiler, automations can bridge the gap. Setting the W600 to a specific temperature could also trigger your main thermostat to turn the heating on.

Most of my testing was done in Zigbee mode using an Aqara M3 hub. With a strong Aqara Zigbee network in place, reliability was excellent and I experienced no dropouts. Matter over Thread performance was generally good as well, supported by multiple Eero devices acting as Thread border routers.
That said, I did occasionally see the W600 shown as heating in Apple Home when no heat was actually being delivered. Removing and reinserting the batteries resolved the issue, but it is not something you would want to deal with regularly.
A room sync feature is available for coordinating multiple W600 units in the same space, but with only one device available, I was unable to test this functionality.
Final thoughs
The Aqara Radiator Thermostat W600 is at its best when used as part of a broader Aqara setup. In Zigbee mode it is dependable, flexible, and genuinely useful for managing heating on a room-by-room basis. Matter over Thread support is a welcome addition, but it does not yet feel as consistent as Aqara’s native approach.
If you already own an Aqara hub and sensors, the W600 is a logical upgrade from the E1 and a compelling alternative to more expensive smart TRVs.
If you plan to rely entirely on Matter without Aqara’s ecosystem, it remains an option, but you should expect a few compromises along the way.
